Foreign oil in Nigeria suffered another setback this week when protestors attacked a remote pipeline forcing 170,000 barrels of production offline. The Shell Petroleum Development Co. - a joint venture among several companies including Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Total SA, and Eni SpA - lost 137,000 barrels per day in production when a valve on the trans-Nigerian pipeline in southern Nigeria was attacked. The attack prompted Shell to call for a force majeure on exports for the time being, Shell officials said.

PeakOil.com - May 17, 2007 - 4:53am
Li Ka-shing didn't know quite what he had when he acquired Husky Oil... Back in 1987, the man who has become China's richest man bought a controlling stake in the small Canadian oil & gas driller. Husky quickly grew production by 11,000 barrels per day through 1989 and doubled its natural gas production in just one year. However, in 1991, under Li's guidance, the company made a move that helped it become one of Canada's dominant energy companies: It spent C$1.6 billion on a pioneering heavy oil upgrader, located near the vast tar sands of western Canada.

Iraq is on the verge of collapse

PeakOil.com - May 17, 2007 - 4:50am
Iraq's government has lost control of vast areas to powerful local factions and the country is on the verge of collapse and fragmentation, a leading British think-tank said on Thursday. Chatham House also said there was not one civil war in Iraq, but "several civil wars" between rival communities, and accused Iraq's main neighbours -- Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- of having reasons "for seeing the instability there continue". "It can be argued that Iraq is on the verge of being a failed state which faces the distinct possibility of collapse and fragmentation," it said in a report.

PeakOil.com - May 16, 2007 - 9:46pm
Across the world alarm bells are starting to clang. Above every gas station, a large sign is proclaiming that prices are on an unstoppable climb towards un-affordability. In Paris, the International Energy Agency has announced that the demand for oil is likely to exceed the supply later this year, unless, of course, OPEC steps up production. In the Middle East OPEC spokesmen reiterate time after time that all is well, there is plenty of oil, and there is no need to increase production.

Russia draws Europe into its orbit

PeakOil.com - May 16, 2007 - 9:35pm
On May 9, the Chinese People's Daily admitted, "If we look at US-Russian relations closely, it is clear that we are standing at the edge of a new cold war." It was an assessment long in coming.

Chinese commentaries in recent months have tended to view the growing tension in Russia's relations with the United States as the inevitable manifestation of the "pulls and pushes" of a complex, but in essence interlocking, relationship of cooperation and competition, where each side is optimally realizing its interests.

But the thinking has changed.

How the Hippies are finally changing the world through Eco Villages

PeakOil.com - May 16, 2007 - 9:30pm
When you read or hear the term Eco Village, what kind of images spring to mind?

A group of hippies with a bent for mung beans, living together in huts made from cow dung with a penchant for, well, not wearing any clothes?

That's not the idea Paul Antonelli from Greenedge Projects has.

Anatomy of an oil discovery

Energy Bulletin - May 16, 2007 - 8:18pm
Dave Cohen, ASPO-USA / Energy Bulletin. Using a correct interpretation of PetroChina's reserves numbers, Sandrea's production model provides ballpark estimates that moderate the hyperbole accompanying the Jidong discovery. Think of it this way: suppose you are doing your laundry and you find a $20 bill in your pants pocket. Even if you are thousands of dollars in debt, how would this lucky find make you feel? At that moment, you would feel good!

Big Oil Attacked Over Record Gas Prices

PeakOil.com - May 16, 2007 - 3:44pm

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Big Oil went on the defensive Wednesday, denying accusations by a consumer group that mismanagement and a lack of competition are the reasons behind this spring's record gasoline prices.

Gas prices hit $3.10 a gallon Wednesday, according to AAA. It's the fourth record day in a row, and the surge has been attributed to low gasoline supplies caused by a lack of refining capacity.

Intentional Communities: How Twin Oaks Made it to 40

PeakOil.com - May 16, 2007 - 3:43pm

Alexis Zeigler* came at age 18, he says, “to get the fuck out of Georgia.” Aubee came to escape the “barrage of ads” that filled her life in San Francisco. Apple came, giving up a job leading Outward Bound trips, to find “a life of investment, the richness of really digging in” to the natural world in which she’d been an adventurer, more than a steward.

Plenty of outsiders come. They’ll pull off I-64 at Shannon Hill, then follow the calm roads a few miles north into Louisa County. Along the way is the usual rural mix of trailers, tiny frame houses, more prosperous-looking farms. Women drag push-mowers over their yards; mailboxes are broadly spaced, each marking the end of a driveway. The landscape here is an illustration of the idea that each family has its own space, makes its own way and looks after its own affairs.

Non-OPEC peak oil, or the point of maximum production of oil, will not occur before 2014, according to industry analysts Wood Mackenzie.

The company has disputed views that a pinnacle may be in sight and contends strong supply growth will prevail in the short term. Barring unexpected disruptions to production, Wood Mackenzie expects total global capacity to grow steadily from 86.3 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2006 to 96.7 million bpd in 2010.
