Hi all,
We’ve put another Matthew Stein mini-interview on the barbie for you – this is #2 of 3. This week Mat talks about the current financial crisis, and the far more serious crises in store for us if we stick to a free market ideology. Down below, you’ll see that we’ve put up Mat’s book, “When Technology Fails”, as our Essential Book o’ the Week. It’s a veritable encyclopedia of what to do when the bow tips up and the deck chairs go sliding by. (Say, wasn’t that last Thursday?) Check them both out at www.howtoboilafrog.com!
On the Essential Article front, we’ve got a three-fer for you:
First up is Dmitry Orlov, with “The 5 Stages of Collapse. This article is a summary of the concepts in “Reinventing Collapse”, updated for our current situation. In case you haven’t already been doing some serious spring cleaning, let this be one more sign to get your house in order – debt paid off, good supply of food in the basement, and a solid community of friends and neighbors around you. Also, floss.
Our second article o’ the week is “Obama's Toughest Challenge: America's Energy Crunch Comes Home,” by Michael T. Klare. This one gives a terrific overview of the current energy outlook for the US, updated for the current financial problems and low oil prices, and what it will mean for America and the world.
Thirdalicious is “Goodbye from a hedge fund manager” – Andrew Lahde quits the biz and decides to tell the truth about how he saw his job and his clientele. Nothing is funnier than the truth!
Our Essential Movie is a free shortie: “Ensuring the future of food”. Back in the old days, it was perfectly normal to trust the total stranger who runs the supermarket to make sure you and your loved ones had a safe supply of food. Nowadays, though, we’re all going to have to take a bit more responsibility. Here’s everything you need to know – in Japanese! (With subtitles.)
Our Funny Web Short is from reliable sources at The Onion News Network: “Sources Warn Miley Cyrus Will Be Depleted by 2013”. Who cares whether Mexico has any oil left! Time to stockpile some Hannah Montana!
Our Essential Link is The Community Solution. Check out the presentation from their recent “Plan C” conference, and if you haven’t watched their movie about how Cuba survived peak oil, order the DVD right away! It’s a must-see, and an excellent date movie. (Make your move when they talk about planting food in used tires.)
Our Action o’ the Week? Buy vintage clothing! The clothing industry has a Sasquatch-sized carbon footprint, and your local thrift store is full of retro gems at a tenth of the price. Used is the new New!
And as always, please forward this FrogLetter to at least one person who's never heard of HTBAF. Our future is in your hands.
Cheers!
Jon & all his friends at www.howtoboilafrog.com
